Awesome Monster Tigernut (Ken Beech)

The Awesome Monster Tigernut Boilie – Boss Bait at Wellington

All these fish were caught from Wellington Country Park aka Welly, all on the monster tiger nut boilie throughout 2007.

The 42.14 was caught from a spot I had cleared off using the angling intelligence weed rakes after watching fish crash, as soon as I had a session where I had a few days ahead of me I raked off the spot just enough to make it clear enough to present a bait which was an 18mm pop up (tiger nut), then sticked a hundred baits out on it each night, it was a nightmare to keep a bait there in the day as the swans could reach it easily, on the second night my lucky charm hazel predicted that we would be up at 2.30 am with a fish,My Old Mate - Split Tail we turned in and for some reason I awoke at 2.20 am and sure enough at 2.30am the left hand rod pulled up tight and started to arc round.
After a heavy and ponderous scrap I netted my old buddy split tail at a new personal best of 42.14, Even though I have now caught her 4 times she put a big smile on my face due to the graft I had put in to catch her. She looks awesome in the photo in the early morning sun.

The 36.12 was caught in October when the lake should have been fishing it's head off, but wasn't and everyone was struggling, it turned out to be the biggest fish caught for the best part of 5 or 6 weeks, I turned up and couldn’t get in where I wanted to so I sat it out in another swim watching odd fish crash in the swim I really needed to be in, I found out that the angler was leaving the next morning so I was up at 4am loading the barrow and moved round there pronto, I left the rods out of the water all day to try and encourage fish into the swim and didn’t cast in until tea time and just trickled in around 100 baits between the 3 rods, job done, I was quite confident of a bite, then my worst nightmare occurred another syndicate member turned up dropped in next to me and proceeded to thrash the water to a foam for two hours!!! I was not impressed and thought he had ruined his and my chances of getting a bite. clown. The Tiger Strikes Again, 36.12 3 am and my middle rod melts off, shortly after I have a 36.12 mirror waiting to be photographed, i took pleasure in waking my noisy neighbour up who was on an overnighter and got him to take loads of photo’s so the flash really woke him up before letting him retire back to his bivvy. The fish was caught on a tiger nut hardened hook bait on a silt patch where I have caught numerous fish from in the past, The capture meant a lot to me as the lake was not fishing at all during this period and the swim had not really done anything of note despite having been fished by some very capable anglers. Job done.

The 35.4 and the 38.8 were caught in September along with two doubles and two fish lost in the weed during a three night session, I eventually chose my swim after much walking round pondering, there was only one swim that had produced over the weekend and the angler was staying on for another night or two and rather than move in around him and ruin his and my chances I opted to fish another area, I was unsure of my choice of swim as I sat drinking coffee with my three rods on spots which had done fish for me in the past, I decided to stay the night and stay up late and get up early to listen for carpy noises, At 4am my middle rod ripped off and after  a hell of a scrap I eventually bundled the 35.4 What a Fight - 35.04lband a huge ball of silkweed into the net, Luvly jubbly! I followed this with a 18.8 pretty mirror and a big fish which I lost contact with after it ploughed through a huge weed bed, The following day I had three bites in two hours and landed the 38.8 a 13.12 common and lost a mid twenty at the net due to a huge ball of weed above the tubing, all fish were hooked on either hardened hook baits or pop-ups over a scattering of freebies. again I was chuffed to get amongst a few fish as most were struggling, It certainly helps to catch a few when you are driving 350 miles to fish.

If ever you go fishing down at Wellington with the Tigernut boilies, you stand a good chance of landing your p.b.

Keep well.
